What is the purpose of the reverse function on a VHF/UHF transceiver?

The reverse function swaps your radio's transmit and receive frequencies, so you listen on the repeater's input frequency. That lets you hear whether the other station is close enough to talk simplex instead.
Tip: Reverse = hear the input. If you hear them clearly there, go simplex.
